About the book

Eleven-year-old Sam and her fourteen-year-old sister, Caitlin, have just arrived to live with their Aunt Vicky and Vicky's wife, Hannah, on a farm in Oregon, and Sam already wants to go home. Something happened there that she does not want to think about, and she believes things could return to the way they were. Then a card game called Fox and Squirrels seems to come to life. A clever, changeable fox named Ashander and a family of squirrels pull Sam into a game where one wrong move could cost her far more than a round of cards. Blending fantasy with realistic family drama, Jenn Reese's middle-grade novel explores fear, loyalty, and what it takes to feel safe and at home. The book includes illustrations by Jessica Roux.

Grade ranges are editorial guidance. Every reader is different.

The story deals with child abuse. The sisters' father's anger and violence come through mostly in memories rather than on-page scenes, and a fantasy fox character can be menacing. Reviewers note the book handles trauma with care.
