About the award

The Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction is an annual award of $25,000 for a single book-length work of imaginative fiction. It was created by the author's literary trust, now the Ursula K. Le Guin Foundation, after her death in 2018, and looks for writers whose work carries the concerns at the center of her own: hope, equity and freedom, alternatives to violence, and a holistic view of people's place in the natural world. The first prize went to Khadija Abdalla Bajaber for The House of Rust in 2022.

Eligible books are written by one author and published in the United States in English or in English translation. If a translation wins, author and translator split the money, and no writer can win more than once. Nominations are open to the public, the foundation draws up a shortlist of about nine titles, and a jury of five writers chooses the winner. The prize is announced each year on October 21, Le Guin's birthday.

A book-length work of imaginative fiction by a single author, published in the U.S. in English or in English translation during the eligibility year; a writer may win only once.

Usually announced in October.
