Thurber Prize for American Humor
About the award
The Thurber Prize for American Humor is one of the highest honors for humor writing in the United States. It is named for James Thurber, the humorist and New Yorker cartoonist, and presented by Thurber House, the literary center and museum in his boyhood home in Columbus, Ohio. The writing prize was first awarded in 1997, has gone to Jon Stewart, David Sedaris, Calvin Trillin, Trevor Noah and Alexandra Petri, among others, and was not given in 1998, 2000 or 2003.
Each year a committee of national judges chooses three finalists, who are celebrated at an award show in Columbus where the winner is announced live. Since 2024, Thurber House has also given a Thurber Prize for American Humor in Cartoon Art, created with New Yorker cartoonists Liza Donnelly and Michael Maslin.
