Award
The Stonewall Book Awards are the oldest awards for LGBTQIA+ books. They began in 1971 as the Gay Book Award, presented by a grassroots group of librarians known as the Task Force on Gay Liberation, and the first honoree was Isabel Miller's novel Patience and Sarah. The award became an official American Library Association honor in 1986, changed names several times as the community it served broadened, and took the Stonewall name in 2002 in reference to the 1969 uprising in New York.
Today the ALA's Rainbow Round Table gives three awards each year: the Barbara Gittings Literature Award, the Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award and, since 2010, the Mike Morgan and Larry Romans Children's and Young Adult Literature Award. Separate committees choose a winner and honor books in each category from English-language books published the previous year, and anyone may suggest a title. Winners are announced in January alongside the ALA Youth Media Awards and celebrated at the ALA Annual Conference in early summer.
English-language books from the prior year that stand out for their treatment of LGBTQIA+ lives, in adult fiction, adult nonfiction, or children's and young adult literature.
Usually announced in January.
