Award
The Stella Prize celebrates writing by Australian women and non-binary authors. It grew out of a 2011 campaign about how rarely books by women were reviewed and recognized in Australia, was first awarded in 2013, and takes its name from the novelist Stella Maria Sarah "Miles" Franklin. The prize is run by The Stella Prize Inc., a not-for-profit organization, and recent shortlists have mixed fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry and graphic novels.
Each year a panel of judges reads the books entered by publishers and may call in other eligible titles. The judges name a longlist in March and a shortlist of six in April, and the winner is announced in May. The winning author receives A$60,000, and each shortlisted author also receives prize money. Books with more than one author are eligible as long as every author meets the rules, and a book first published in another language does not lose its eligibility.
Books by women and non-binary writers who are Australian citizens or permanent residents, first published during the previous calendar year.
Usually announced in May.
