About the award

The Nebula Awards are presented each year by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, and the winners are chosen by the association's own members, which makes them a prize given to writers by their peers. The first awards were handed out in 1966 for work from the year before. The central prose categories are novel, novella, novelette and short story. Over time SFWA added the Andre Norton Award for middle-grade and young adult books, the Ray Bradbury Award for dramatic presentations, a game writing category and, starting in 2025, poetry and comics.

Members nominate eligible works from the previous year, the leading choices form the final ballot, and members vote again to pick the winners. The awards are handed out at the Nebula Conference each spring, where SFWA also names its Damon Knight Grand Master for a career in the field.

Science fiction and fantasy published during the previous calendar year, judged in separate categories by length, with a dedicated award for middle-grade and young adult books.
