Award
The Miles Franklin Literary Award is one of Australia's oldest literary prizes. It goes each year to a novel of the highest literary merit that presents Australian life in any of its phases. The award was created through the will of the writer Stella Miles Franklin, who set aside a bequest to advance and improve Australian literature, and it was first presented in 1957. Perpetual serves as trustee of the bequest and manages the award.
A judging panel reads the year's entries and announces a longlist, then a shortlist, before naming the winner at a ceremony in Sydney. Each shortlisted writer receives a cash award, and the winner receives 60,000 Australian dollars. Under the terms of the will, the judges may consider a play for stage or radio in a year when no novel meets the standard.
Novels of the highest literary merit that portray Australian life in any of its phases. The terms of the bequest also allow a stage or radio play to be considered in a year when no novel meets the standard.
Usually announced in July.
