About the award

The Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award is one of the largest prizes for a single book of poetry in the United States. Kate Tufts established it at Claremont Graduate University in California in memory of her husband, Kingsley Tufts, a Los Angeles shipyard executive who wrote poetry, and a year later she added the Kate Tufts Discovery Award for a first book by a poet of genuine promise.

The Kingsley Tufts award carries a prize of $100,000 and honors a collection by a poet in mid-career, while the Discovery Award carries $10,000. Finalists are announced early in the year and the winners in February, and both poets are celebrated at a ceremony at Claremont in the spring.

Poetry collections published in the previous year; the Kingsley Tufts Award honors a mid-career poet and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award a debut collection.

Usually announced in February.
