The Griffin Poetry Prize is the world's largest international prize for a single first-edition collection of poetry written in or translated into English. The Canadian businessman and philanthropist Scott Griffin founded it in 2000 with a group of trustees that included Margaret Atwood, Robert Hass and Michael Ondaatje. For many years it gave separate Canadian and international prizes, which were combined into a single international award in 2023.
Each year a panel of judges names a longlist of ten books in March and a shortlist of five in April. The winner, announced at readings in Toronto in June, receives C$130,000, and each of the other shortlisted poets receives C$10,000. When the winning book is a translation, the prize is shared between the translator and the original poet. The trust also gives a Canadian First Book Prize and a Lifetime Recognition Award.
First-edition collections of poetry written in or translated into English by living poets from any country, published during the prize year; translations are eligible.
Usually announced in June.
