About the award

The Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction is the UK's leading annual award for nonfiction writing. Founded in 1999 and first known as the Samuel Johnson Prize, it is open to books on any subject, from history, politics and science to biography, memoir, travel, sport and the arts, and to authors of any nationality. A book may first have appeared in any language, provided an English edition comes out in the United Kingdom during the prize year; when a translation wins, the translator shares the award.

A new independent panel of judges is appointed each year and considers more than 350 eligible books. The panel names a longlist in September and a shortlist of six in early autumn, and the winner is revealed at a London ceremony in November. The winning author receives £50,000. The prize is run as an independent company and takes its current name from its sponsor, the Edinburgh investment firm Baillie Gifford.

Nonfiction books on any subject by writers of any nationality, with an English edition published in the UK during the prize year; translations are eligible, and a winning translator shares the prize.

Usually announced in November.
