Biography

Timothy Egan is an American journalist and author who writes narrative history and nonfiction, much of it about the American West. A third-generation Westerner and a graduate of the University of Washington, he spent nearly two decades at The New York Times, first covering the Pacific Northwest and later reporting national stories, and he went on to write an opinion column for the paper. He was part of the Times reporting team whose series How Race Is Lived in America won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting.

His book The Worst Hard Time (2005), about families who endured the Dust Bowl on the High Plains, won the 2006 National Book Award for Nonfiction, and Egan later appeared in Ken Burns's documentary on the Dust Bowl. His other books include The Good Rain, The Big Burn, Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher, The Immortal Irishman, A Pilgrimage to Eternity and A Fever in the Heartland.

Egan is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and lives in Seattle.
