Biography

Sherman Alexie is a novelist, short story writer, poet and screenwriter. A registered member of the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene tribes, he grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington, earned a degree in American studies at Washington State University and later settled in Seattle.

His first book, the poetry collection The Business of Fancydancing (1992), was followed by fiction including Reservation Blues (1995), Indian Killer (1996) and Flight (2007), and by further poetry collections such as One Stick Song (2000) and Face (2009). He collaborated with director Chris Eyre on the film Smoke Signals (1998). His young adult novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (2007), about a teenage cartoonist who leaves the reservation school for an all-white high school, won the 2007 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

Much of his work uses humor to explore contemporary Native American life on and off the reservation.
