Doug Salati

Doug Salati is an author and illustrator of picture books based in New York City. He earned an MFA in Illustration as Visual Essay from the School of Visual Arts in 2014 and was named a Sendak Fellow the following year.

Salati began his career illustrating books by other writers, including In a Small Kingdom by Tomie dePaola and Lawrence in the Fall by Matthew Farina. Hot Dog (2022), the first picture book he both wrote and illustrated, follows a dachshund who escapes a sweltering summer day in the city for an afternoon by the sea. It won the 2023 Caldecott Medal.

His loose, light-filled drawings often capture city life and quiet moments in nature, and his books are made for young children and the adults who read with them.
